Brief History: John Jones is the last (or one of the last) survivors of Mars, though he has chosen a human shape to blend in on Earth. His civilization was once destroyed. Years ago, he worked as a bounty hunter, giving assistance to Jor-El in tracking down the worst criminals across the universe. The Kryptonian scientist had fashioned a crystal for John, which would be used to send targets to the Phantom Zone once sucked into it.When the planet was being destroyed, Jor-El charged the Martian with watching over his son. He watched the boy from afar. It would be like a test. He was never to interfere, not unless Kal-El was facing odds beyond his chance of survival.. such as the time when a group of wraiths had escaped the Zone. And so he helped the young man put some of them back.
The alien had helped CLark other times as well. Such as taking care of foes like Bizarro Clark and Vandal Savage. He saved a human Clark by flying him to the sun.. but it also robbed the Martian of his abilities, making him mortal. So he got a job working as a detective for Metropolis PD, helping the city's police force. There was a close call when he was shot (and risk of exposure), but he pulled through. And unknown to the others, sometime around Doomsday's defeat, John's powers had returned.
